Classroom Spotlight – Using a Real World Problem to Teach Math … of all things!

In Ms. Baker’s Algebra 3 class at eSTEM last month, students learned about quadratic equations.  However, instead of simply drilling through a plethora of problem sets, students addressed the problem, “How can we boost the Wi-Fi hotspot on Ms. Baker’s phone?”  Ms. Baker has shared her own passion for gaming with her students, including her accounts of playing the recently popular game Pokémon Go with her own children.  If her kids were sharing the Wi-Fi on her phone between their own hand-held devices, how could they enhance their experience of playing the game together?

PAST Joins The Nation Of Makers
Bringing Access to Spaces, Communities & Tools To Make Things

We are proud to be one of 300 organizations that are the Nation of Makers! Working with leaders from the maker community in all 50 states, PAST is committed to continuing to foster the growth and inclusivity of the maker community.

What is the Nation of Makers? 

Board Member Adam Savage of MythBusters and tested.com shares the excitement of this movement in one minute!

This fall PAST and Otterbein University partnered on Maker Mania, Sunday events where kids make things: paper speakers, robot art, even holiday gifts. More Maker Mania events are planned for 2017 but you still have a chance to register your kids for the final event of the season, this Sunday, November 20 at Otterbein.  Learn more and register here.

Telltales To Learning
PAST Awarded Maritime Heritage Grant For Field Training Project

Through this innovative program, teachers receive professional development, students are immersed in educational field activities and adults are exposed maritime heritage field programs. The Field School, held in Salem, Massachusetts brings real-world experiences to students and teachers. During each week-long session, participants will map real shipwrecks, fly drones, sail on a tall ship and record artifacts. They will help preserve our rich maritime heritage while enjoying a unique learning experience.

Telltales to Learning is a collaboration of the PAST Foundation, Seafaring Education and Maritime Archaeological Heritage Program (SEAMAHP) with Salem State University (SSU), and other organizations.

The Field School will be held in two sessions, June 19 – 23, 2017 and June 26 – 30, 2017, is open to students in grades 6 – 12 and adults. Registration will open on January 1, 2017. Visit our website for more information.
